Effect of Watering Interval and Giving Mycorrhizae to Growth Cocoa Seedlings (Theobroma cacao L.) on Various of Growing Media

Abstract

  • Introduction: This objective of this experiment was to determine the watering interval, concentration of mycorrhizae, and the best growing media for cocoa seedlings.
  • Materials and Methods: Experiments carried out in the greenhouse of Tobacco Deli and Cane Research Institute, Medan, North Sumatra Province from September until December 2017. The method used was Randomized Block Design with factorial. The first factor was the watering interval with three levels of watering interval: once of every 1, 3, and 5 days. The second factor was the inoculation of mycorrhiza consisting of three levels: un-inoculation of mycorrhiza, mycorrhiza inoculant of 50 g plant-1, and 100 g plant-1. The third factor was the growing media with four levels of growing media: soil, soil+fiber, soil+OPEFB (Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch), and soil+sludge.
  • Results: Giving the watering interval once of every 3 days with application of mycorrhizae 100 g plant-1 concentration on growing media of soil+fiber is the best treatment for growth cocoa seedlings that is stem diameter and leaf number parameters.
